New article on FP7 VPH project preDICT in iSGTW
An article on a VPH project was published in International Science Grid this Week (iSGTW). iSGTW is an international weekly online publication that covers distributed computing and the research it enables.
The article details the FP7 - VPH preDICT project which finished in May 2011. Many drugs fail to reach the market because of side effects on the heart. The principal aim of preDICT was to create an advanced computational technology for in silico assessment of the efficacy and safety of specific drugs i.e. an open environment comprising validated computational models, tools and numerical methods that enable simulations of drug actions on the electrophysiology of the human heart.
In the article Professor Peter Taggart of University College London states “Computational methodology developed by preDiCT enables us to bridge the gap between laboratory experiments in cells and live patients. In patients the electrocardiogram (ECG) is a widely used non-invasive clinical tool that provides valuable information on the heart. PreDiCT has greatly improved our understanding of how the ECG relates to biological mechanisms going on within heart cells.”
