Host Institutions
The first Barcelona School of Biomedical Informatics (BSBMI'09) will be hosted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, on February 16th-20th 2009. The event will take place in the outstanding premises of the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona, located next to the beachfront in Barcelona. The event is jointly organized by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), the Institut Municipal d'Invetsigació Mèdica (IMIM - Hospital del Mar) as an external course linked to the MSc program on Bioinformatics for Health Sciences, a joint venture between the UPF and the Universitat de Barcelona.
Objective
The School will provide a framework for the presentation of some of the latest developments and tools in the field of translational bioinformatics, whilst allowing participants to gain direct experience of using such tools in hands-on sessions. The School is aimed at Graduate Students and Research Scientists working in the field of biomedical informatics, and will bring together experts from both the public and private sectors.
BSBMI'09 will have a focus on the already stablished emerging field of systems biology, its computational aspects and, in particular, its relationship with translational research in biomedicine. To reach such ambitious objectives, practical aspects developed within the EC-STREP projects BioBridge and QosCosGrid will be demonstrated.
Format
BSBMI'09 will consist of a series of Keynote and Plenary Lectures introducing new innovations in translational bioinformatics, followed by tutorials showcasing the range and scope of these tools. In the afternoons there will be three-hour dedicated hands-on sessions where participants will be able to explore in more detail the tools presented in the morning sessions following a small group project that will span the entire week.
The hands-on sessions will consist of teamwork to solve assigned problems using the knowledge gained during the morning sessions, and the participants will be expected to present a brief summary of their methodology and findings in the appropriate sessions on the final day of the event. While each day will have a different central theme, it is anticipated that there will be synergistic overlap between these themes.
