5th International Advanced Research Workshop on In Silico Oncology and Cancer Investigation
An IEEE-EMBS Technically Cosponsored Event Funded by the European Commission under the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) Initiative
Athens, Greece, October 22-23, 2012
Cancer is a natural phenomenon and as such it should be amenable to mathematical and computational description.
Clinically driven complex multiscale cancer models can produce rather realistic spatio-temporal simulations of concrete clinical interventions such as radio-chemotherapy applied to individual patients.
Clinical data processing procedures and computer technologies play an important role in this context. Following clinical adaptation and validation within the framework of clinico-genomic trials, models are expected to enhance individualized treatment optimization. The latter constitutes the long term goal of the emergent scientific, technological and medical discipline of in silico oncology.
Treatment optimization is to be achieved through experimentation in silico i.e. on the computer. Moreover, provision of insight into tumour dynamics and optimization of clinical trial design and interpretation constitute short- and mid-term goals of this new domain. Researchers working either in the area of in silico oncology or in the broader cancer research domain yet with an interest incomputational oncology are invited to submit short papers.
The workshop is meant to be an excellent opportunity for both shaping and advancing the discipline.
Paper Submission deadline: 24 August 2012
Engage with DISCIPULUS! (The Digital Patient Roadmap)
The DISCIPULUS project, an undertaking established by the European Commission in October 2011 to set up a roadmap for the "digital patient" will be organising an open consultation meeting on the 26th and 27th of November 2012 in Barcelona, in order to inform the ‘Digital Patient’ Roadmap. And we need our community behind us.
For a timeline of the project, please visit: http://www.digital-patient.net/project.html
This open meeting will call on worldwide experts within and outside the VPH community will identify and propose recommendations for the Roadmap for the Digital Patient. Views will be invited to discuss the outcomes of the First Consultation Meeting (March 2012) and to propose specific actions to update the draft Roadmap (http://www.digital-patient.net/files/DISCIPULUS_D6-2_Draft_Roadmap_final.pdf )
Any member of the community wishing to get involved in the production of the final roadmap can do so on our dedicated forum at www.biomedtown.org/biomed_town/discipulus/reception/forum
We also invite technology and clinical experts to write their views on our wikipages at www.biomedtown.org/biomed_town/discipulus/reception/wiki
The registration for the 2nd consultation meeting will open on the 5th of September 2012 and registrations will be accepted (on a first-come, first-served basis) until reaching the maximum capacity of the rooms we’ve booked.
To register (from the 5th of September onwards), please go to Digital Patient website: www.digital-patient.net
The DISCIPULUS project aims at the grand challenge of the "Digital VPH Patient," in particular, to produce a roadmap for its realisation. The Digital Patient is a method of integrating diverse computational models and individual data to produce a computational patient avatar. This would allow revolutionary health prediction and disease treatment when the "Digital Me" of a citizen needs to avail of health services.
Tech2012
Tech2012 – workshop on the VPH ToolKit and portal
The Tech2012 will be held on Friday 21st September in London (the day after VPH2012). This event is based on the VPH NoE Toolkit, the creation of which was one of the main aims of the VPH NoE project. The VPH NoE ToolKit is the place to find everything you need to complete your modelling project. It’s a central European repository for Tools, Models and Data that will provide the missing component to help you build your application. This year’s meeting gives you the chance to hear from each institution participating in the VPH NoE’s Technical Workpackage. The development teams will put their work in technical and international context, and they’ll outline the developments that are being considered for implementation during Horizon 2020.

There is no admission charge although registration is required. To register please click here
Report on the 3rd VPH study group on VPH Toolkit
The third VPH NoE study group (SG3) was held in Barcelona in May 2012. The event, organised by the University of Sheffield, Super Computing Solutions, Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, and Universitat Pompeu Fabra, took place at UPF premises the week after the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI 2012).
Following the success of previous study groups organised by the VPH NoE Consortium, the format of SG3 was kept quite similar to that of SG1 and SG2. The organisers invited three groups of world- recognised experts, typically leading large VPH Projects, to submit a proposal for a grand challenge in the area of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and oncology research. The organisers requested that these grand challenges would identify each a challenging modelling workflow, a minimum list of “essential” tools known to be necessary, and a list of European research groups that are known to be active in research topics that could benefit from the complete realisation of such workflow.
5th ARTreat newsletter out now!
ARTreat have just published their 5th newsletter which contains the latest information on the scientific and technical work carried out in the framework of the ARTreat project, plus recent and future dissemination activities.
ARTreat is an EC-funded eHealth FP7 collaborative R&D project aiming at developing a multi-level, patient-specific computational model of the cardiovascular system used to improve the quality of prediction for the atherosclerosis progression and propagation into life-threatening events that need to be treated accordingly.
