Research Fellow

A multi-scale modelling framework for airway hyper-responsiveness & remodelling in asthma

Applications are invited for the above MRC-funded post based in the School of Mathematical Sciences at
the University of Nottingham. The person appointed will develop predictive mathematical models of
calcium (and inflammatory) signalling cascades and waves to understand inter- and intra-cellular
communication between the airway epithelial and airway smooth muscle cell layers. This work will be
done as part of a larger project investigating the multi-scale (from sub-cellular to tissue level)
mechanisms underlying the patho-physiological processes involved in asthma. The successful candidate
will thus work within a multi-disciplinary team in collaboration with leading experimentalists and
mathematical modellers in Nottingham, the US and New Zealand.

Candidates must have a PhD in a branch of applied mathematics and an enthusiasm for multidisciplinary
research, possibly with experience in mathematical biology. Essential skills include dynamical systems
and computational skills for numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. Research
experience in models of calcium dynamics and waves informed by experimental data would be desirable.

Salary will be £27,319 per annum. This full-time post is available from 3 January 2011 or as soon as
possible thereafter and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years.
